Emirates updates the checked baggage policy with new weight allowances

Emirates announced that starting 4 February 2019 their checked baggage policy will change. This will apply for tickets purchased beyond that date, while tickets booked before 4 February will have the old allowances.

The new checked baggage policy is basically a reduction in weight allowances for basically all-Economy class flights that are not under a higher Fare type, but however, it’s not a major change if you can live with the age of restrictions for economy class passengers.

Travel from Europe, Asia and Australia

For all routes that are originating in Europe, Asia or Australia you can expect a weight concept allowance.

For travel originating in Europe, Asia and Australia you basically can expect a baggage allowance as low as 15 kilograms.

Previously, passengers traveling on tickets issued before 4 February 2019 had a weight allowance starting from 20 kg.

Now, passengers traveling in Economy Special fares will have an allowance of 15 kg (down from 20), while Economy Saver tickets will have a baggage allowance of 25 kg (down from 30kg).

Passengers traveling on Economy Flex and Flex Plus will have a weight allowance for their baggage of up to 30 kg, respectively 35 kg.

Tickets in business class will remain with the 40kg baggage allowance, while first class passengers can bring baggage totaling up to 50 kg.

However, each individual baggage for all classes of travel must weight less than 32 kilograms in total.

Travel to and from Americas and originating in Africa

For those traveling to and from America (North America – The US, Mexico, South Africa) and flights originating in Africa there will be a piece concept restriction.

This allowance are more like similar to what European carriers are standardizing.

For passengers traveling in Economy Class they had previously a baggage allowance of up to 23 kg.

This will remain for Economy Saver, Flex and Flex Plus passengers, while Economy Special passengers will have that allowance for only one piece of baggage. So, no major change here.

Passengers traveling in Business and First class will remain with the two pieces up to 32 kg each baggage allowance.

The total dimensions (length + width + height) of each piece must not exceed 150 cm (59 inches).

You’ll be charged an additional fee for any individual items exceeding dimensions of 150 cm (59 inches), up to a maximum of 300 cm (118 inches). If an individual item has total dimensions greater than 300 cm (118 inches), it can’t be checked in as baggage and will need to be sent as cargo or freight.
