7 Wonderful Cities in Eastern Europe Worth Visiting
Although not as popular than the Western Europe, Eastern Europe definitely has it’s beauty that waits to be discovered. Less populated than Western Europe, many regions from the Eastern Part of the Old Continent will help find your peace and tranquility.
Budapest, Hungary
Hungarian Capital it’s a must for every frequent city-breaker. The city is absolutely wonderful during the summer. Really fairly priced and with lots of flights to Budapest by Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air, it is really easy and cheap to get into Budapest from every corner of Europe. Also, the city has worldwide famous music festivals such as Sziget Fesztival.
Budapest’s iconic Palace of the Parliament and Lion’s bridge over the Danube will for surely be your favorite spots in this 2 million population city.
Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria
Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria is a city that you must see both in summer and in winter. During summertime it’s very green and in the winter it covers itself with a white robe. With a population of under 70,000 this is the smallest city that made on our list.
You can get to Veliko Tarnovo by plane, arriving both from Sofia or Bucharest. I would suggest arriving from Bucharest, since you can combine a vacation between the two cities.
Sibiu, Romania
Sibiu was in 2007 the European Capital of Culture and hosted numerous Festivals. Since then the City continued to invest in restoration of its famous architecture. Sibiu is worth visiting because you have just a couple of tens of kilometers away another wonderful Medieval City – the city of Sighisoara.
Although the German population in the Romanian city of Sibiu is only around 2% nowadays, you can find their influence on almost every building in this Transylvanian town.
Istanbul, Turkey
You can’t say you knew Europe until you go from one side of it to the another. And Istanbul it’s the perfect place to start or end your European trip since it is a city that is on two continents. So beautiful and so different from Western Europe.
Although recent situations might feel you uncomfortable traveling to Istanbul, it’s still a city that should be on everyone’s bucket list. It’s bazaars and food stalls are absolutely fantastic, the whole city is an experience.
Due to the current situations, it’s even cheaper than ever, with airplane ticket and accommodation prices being at a really minimum.
Lviv, Ukraine
Lviv, in Ukraine, it’s like a hidden gem in Europe’s tourism. With it’s UNESCO World Heritage List historic City Center, Lviv will be a place where you can go without any expectations and be really amazed. The city was founded back in the 13th century and for a long time it was Ukraine’s biggest city by the number of population.
As you would expect, the city has it’s really long history, been under many neighbor countries occupation. Lviv was also the capital of Galicia and after World War I was a Polish city. Only after WW II it became part of USSR. Currently the Pole minority represents only under 1%.
The location of the city is really close to the Polish, Hungarian and Romanian border so even if there are quite a few direct flights to the Ukrainian city you should find ways to get into it really fast.
Oradea, Romania
Our second Romanian pick sits in the Western Romania, really close to some other famous Romanian cities such as Cluj Napoca, Arad, Timișoara or Hungarian city of Debrecen. The reason why we choosed to show this city instead of others is because altough a small city it has a relly special vibe that will make you really calm. The architecture is not that much different than in other regional cities but it is very clean and close to the springs of Băile Felix, which you should really visit if you arrive in the region.
Belgrade, Serbia
The Capital of Serbia has a great mix of culture, history and modern buildings in neighborhoods such as Nuovo Beograd. Belgrad it’s still a city that awaits to be discovered, so if you are an explorer be sure to add Belgrade on your destination lists in the near future. Before others discover this wonderful city.
My favorite spot in Belgrade it’s in the old city citadel where you can see the confluence of the Danube and Sava river. Also, nearby the Old Citadel you can find the City Zoo, not that modern but with an interesting arrangement between the old citadels walls.
